Newtown, PA 18940

Newtown, PA – In 1684, William Penn established Newtown. Penn established several towns near Philadelphia, including Newtown, to provide country homes for city dwellers and to support farming communities. From 1726 until 1813, when a more central Doylestown took place, it served as Bucks County’s county seat. General George Washington established his headquarters in Newtown following his early morning, December 26, 1776, march to Trenton and before the Battle of Princeton. On April 16, 1838, Newtown became a city and underwent three expansions. The National Register of Historic Places listed Newtown’s central business district in 1969. The old clock tower in Newtown played a significant role in this designation. Unique shops, colleges, restaurants, a business-friendly environment, Pennsylvania’s most visited state park (Tyler State Park), and a Heritage Walk that follows George Washington’s footsteps all add to the appeal of Newtown. Newtown Township serves as the home office for the Law School Admission Council. Therefore, Newtown is well-known to American lawyers.

With so much history, Newtown is well-known. The Newtown Historical Association is a recognized historical organization in Newtown. Edward Hicks, a painter, was among the most well-known ex-Newtown residents. He spent over forty years residing in Newtown with his family and running his own business there.
